226 escaped prisoners return to Kailali jail, 441 still at large

Dhangadhi: A total of 226 prisoners who had escaped from Kailali Prison during the Genji generation protest on Bhadra 24 have returned, according to the District Prison Office.

Prison Chief Chiranjivi Sapkota confirmed that 27 female and 199 male prisoners are now back in custody. Some inmates returned voluntarily as early as the day after the escape, while others were arrested by police in the Tikapur area and handed over to the prison administration.

“The Prison Management Department has repeatedly urged prisoners to return, and we have also issued public notices. Police are continuing their search, and we believe the remaining inmates will also return soon,” Sapkota said.

Kailali Prison had 667 inmates at the time of the protest, including 58 women. Of them, 666 managed to escape. With 226 prisoners already back in custody, 441 remain at large, the prison administration confirmed.
