Farmers begin wheat sowing in the highlands of Far western province
Baitadi: Farmers in the hilly districts of Far Western Province, including Baitadi, are now engaged in wheat sowing season.
In the high-altitude Lekali region, sowing is in its final stages, while the Bensi areas will continue sowing until the second week of November. Narad Bhatt from Dogada-Kedar Rural Municipality-3 mentioned that wheat sowing mats are currently in use for the planting process in non-irrigated areas, with the season beginning in early October.
Farmers opt to sow from the first week of October due to colder temperatures in the Lekali area. Ghanshyam Choudhary, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center in Baitadi, confirmed that wheat planting has progressed since early October and is nearly complete in the Lekali areas. Before sowing, fields are plowed and manure is applied, although Choudhary noted that applying dung manure post-sowing is less ideal for wheat.
WK 1204 wheat seeds are commonly used in Baitadi. This season, wheat will cover 15,400 hectares in the district, but irrigation remains limited across more than half of the area.
