More than 87 women were murdered  in Far-West, and more than 7000 crimes against women in the past decade

Dhangadhi: 21-year-old Maya Luhar of Baitadi was brutally murdered on 13 Mangsir when she refused to marry. Maya of Pancheswar Rural Municipality-4 had returned home from the police station. According to District Police Spokesman Lokraj Joshi, Bharatram Koli of Shivnath Rural Municipality-4, working as a jawan in the armed police, proposed Maya. He wanted to marry her. However, when Maya refused the marriage proposal, Bharatram killed her by slitting her throat.

Every year since 2054, the campaign against gender violence has been conducted in Nepal, and government and non-government bodies hold conferences, collect data and hold debates. But in these two and a half decades, the government has formulated new policies, programs, and laws to control violence. There is no accounting of the expenditure incurred on it. However, domestic violence, discrimination, crime, and exclusion against women on the basis of gender have not stopped, rather it is increasing.

Also, the achievements of the women's movement are not weak. Because of the 062/063 people's movement and women's struggle, a woman became the president and speaker of the assembly. 14,000 women have become people's representatives in local governments alone, which are close to citizens. However, incidents of violence against women like the above examples show that Nepali society is still unsafe for women and they are not able to live with self-respect.

According to the central data of Nepal Police, 87 women have been murdered in the Far West during the last 55 months. Some have considered masculinist social consciousness and power to be the main reason for the killing of women. Rape is also a product of masculinist social consciousness, so it is argued that it is the reason for killing women. There has been no specific study of the reason for the murder of women.

However, from a sociological point of view, male-dominated social consciousness and power are somehow associated with it. This is the reason behind rape. In that case, sex can also be linked as a reason behind the murder of women. According to the police, increasing unemployment, indiscriminate use of social media, alcohol and drug abuse, family disputes, property, dowry, and foreign employment are also factors that are linked to female homicide.

Unemployment is increasing in society. Indiscriminate use of social media has increased. Alcohol consumption is the same. It has also been seen from the study that most of the crimes against women are committed by members of the family. Most sexual crimes are also committed by acquaintances or family members and there is a risk that women may be killed while hiding it. There is not only violence against women, but also murder.

In the last 67 months, there have been seven thousand one hundred twenty-nine crimes against women in Far West. During this period, crimes such as rape, polygamy, caste untouchability, abortion, kidnapping, human trafficking, and rape occurred. Similarly, 129 girls were raped in the Far West during the 7-year period till 2077.
