Kathmandu: Nagarik Unmukti Party MP Arun Chaudhary will be released after the President granted amnesty.
On the recommendation of the government, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has pardoned the sentence of MP Arun Kumar Chaudhary, who was convicted in the arson case and is in jail. The President's Office said that the decision on the pardon was made on Friday.
Jitendra Basnet, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that although there was a recommendation on the issue of amnesty, no official information about the decision had been received.
"We recommended the names of 14 people for amnesty, but official information about this has not come from the President's office," he said. In a statement issued by Leelakant Paudel, Assistant Spokesperson of the President's Office, it is mentioned that 14 people including Arun Chaudhary have been pardoned.
Despite supporting the government from the center to the state, the Nagarik Unmukti Party is sitting out demanding the release of Resham Chaudhary and Arun Chaudhary.
Arun Chaudhary is going to be released after the President pardoned him on the occasion of Democracy Day. Laxman Kishore Chaudhury, head of the party's organization department, said that now it has only been decided that he will be released, but he has not been released. He said that he will take a decision about the government only after MP Arun Chaudhary comes out.
However, the leader of the same party, Surendra Chaudhary, said that now the Nagarik Unmukti Party should participate in the state government. He said the release of Resham Chaudhary and Arun Chaudhary is related to the federal government. After Arun Chaudhary came out, he said that the party will discuss this matter, and he argued that the party should not be held prisoner of indecision. Nagarik Unmukti Party MP Arun Kumar Chaudhary was arrested on Magh 19.
Chaudhary, who was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Kailali-2, was arrested by the Banke police. Chaudhary, who is in Kailali jail, wrote a letter to the president on February 3 to seek pardon. The government decided to proceed with the process of releasing MP Chaudhary and the file was sent to the President's Office. The constitutional provision is that the President will make the final decision on the release of imprisonment and amnesty.
Kailali district administration office said that it may take two to three days to complete the release process.
