Kanchanpur: Following budget allocations for sports infrastructure, construction activities in Kanchanpur have gained momentum. According to the District Sports Committee, a cricket ground, a 400-meter athletics track, and a hockey playground are currently under construction.

District Sports Committee Office Chief Gopal Dutta Bhatta stated that these infrastructures are being developed in the current fiscal year with investment from the Sudurpaschim Province Government. A budget of Rs 50 million has been allocated for filling soil at the cricket ground, Rs 2.5 million for the 400-meter track, and Rs 1.5 million for the construction of the hockey ground. Additionally, the provincial government is also working on the renovation of a boxing training center.

For the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84, the central government has allocated Rs 30 million for the construction of the cricket ground. District Cricket Association President Birendra Bahadur Chand said that the budget has already been received and emphasized the need for its timely implementation. He stated, “The presence of national-level players from Mahendranagar proves that it is a hub for cricket talent. With the construction of the cricket ground, it will be easier to produce more skilled players.”

He added that soil filling work is currently underway with Rs 5 million allocated by the provincial government. “Earlier, Rs 20 million allocated by the central and provincial governments was spent on soil filling,” he said. “There are plans to construct additional structures, including the ground, a zenjing room, and a media house in the upcoming budget.” Regular training for 12 to 13 sports is currently being conducted in Mahendranagar.

Infrastructure has already been developed for sports such as kabaddi, sitorio karate, taekwondo, volleyball, boxing, and others. Recently, with support from the provincial government, the construction of a wrestling training hall has reached its final stage.

Kanchanpur District Sports Committee Chairman Gyanendra Bahadur Singh said that additional budget has been requested from the provincial government for the development, expansion, and construction of sports infrastructure. “This time, we requested an additional Rs 30 million to modernize the track,” he said. He further informed that a total of Rs 65 million has been demanded from the provincial government for the upcoming fiscal year and added that a proposal will be made to collaborate with local levels in Kanchanpur for the development of sports.
