Kathmandu: Bharat Bahadur Khadka has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. The committee’s meeting held on Friday elected Khadka as the Chairman unopposed.

Senior member Sitaram Sah, who chaired the meeting, announced that Khadka was elected unanimously as he was the only candidate for the post of Chairman. Mohan Bahadur Acharya had proposed that Khadka be elected as the Chairman.

After being elected, newly elected Chairman Khadka defined the Public Accounts Committee as an important organ of the state and made it clear that he would make economic governance and financial discipline the main agenda during his tenure. He expressed his commitment to enhance the dignity of the committee by making maximum use of his past experience, qualifications and capabilities.

“Financial discipline and good governance are essential conditions for the economic development of the country,” said Chairman Khadka. “The anomalies seen in the past will not be allowed to repeat themselves. The committee will increase its activity so that the citizens can directly experience good governance.”

Chairman Khadka pointed out that there is a lack of transparency and accountability in government bodies from the federal to the local levels and said that there is a need for comprehensive reforms. According to him, since fiscal discipline is the basis of the country’s economic development, the committee will be strict in ensuring its compliance. He said that the expenditure system and audit of government bodies will be made more systematic for sustainable development and good governance.
