Illegal excavation resumes in Mohana river in Kanchanpur, concerns over weak enforcement
Kanchanpur: The issue of illegal excavation in the Mohana River at Rajghat in Krishnapur Municipality-9 has resurfaced, raising serious concerns among local authorities and residents.
Ward Chairman Kailash Balayar stated that the contractor has continued excavation work despite his efforts to halt the contract. According to him, excavation is being carried out in the Rajghat area using excavators without conducting an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE).
It has been reported that stone, gravel, and sand are being extracted in violation of established norms, particularly around the Mohana Bridge. The contract for river-based material extraction was awarded in the month of Shrawan, with Yamuna Construction Service responsible for the work.
Chief Administrative Officer Khagendra Bhatta has expressed commitment to stopping activities that violate regulations. He said a monitoring team will be deployed to investigate the situation and take necessary action.
However, attempts to gather further information have been hindered, as the mayor, deputy mayor, and engineer have not been reachable. Sources have also alleged that some forest committees and local representatives may be involved in illegal mining for financial gain.
The continued excavation highlights concerns over weak local regulation, disregard for environmental standards, and possible collusion. Locals have warned that such activities could alter the river’s course and increase the risk of flooding in nearby settlements.
