Silence period for house of representatives elections begins at midnight; violators face nomination cancellation
Kathmandu: Candidates contesting the House of Representatives elections scheduled for Falgun 21 will be permitted to campaign only until 12 midnight on Monday. Following that, the silence period for the House of Representatives Elections, 2082 will come into effect.
According to the Election Commission, the silence period will remain in force from 48 hours before the day of voting until the closure of polling stations. During this time, election campaigning and any related activities are strictly prohibited.
The Commission has outlined specific codes of conduct to be observed during the silence period. All forms of meetings, conferences, interactions, seminars, workshops and promotional discussions are prohibited. Additionally, promotional materials of parties or candidates displayed within 300 meters of polling stations must be removed 48 hours prior to the voting day.
The Commission has also barred the posting, sharing or responding to messages, information or promotional materials in favor of or against any party or candidate across social media, online platforms, print and other media outlets, whether or not artificial intelligence (AI) is used.
Separate codes of conduct have been established for media institutions, their staff and journalists. During the silence period, talk shows, commentaries, analysis and question-and-answer programs related to political parties or candidates will not be permitted.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that strict action will be taken against any candidate or party found violating the prescribed code of conduct during the silence period, and if necessary, their nomination may be canceled. The Commission has also clarified that previously posted promotional materials on social media must be removed and that no activities aimed at influencing voters should be carried out during this period.
