16th president’s running shield competition kicks off in Dhangadhi

Dhangadhi: The 16th President’s Running Shield Competition-2082, organized by Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City, commenced today under the slogan “Sports for health, sports for the city.” The event features participation from 26 community schools and 20 institutional schools.

The competition, which began on Magh 4, will continue until Magh 8. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at Dhangadhi Stadium, Mayor Gopal Hamal emphasized that sports should be connected to health and lifestyle rather than solely focused on winning or losing. “Sports should be played not only for winning but for a healthy life. Sports should be for forever,” he said. He also highlighted the city’s commitment to constructing sports grounds and encouraged schools and students to ensure access to proper facilities. “Sports are not only for students, but are necessary for everyone,” he added.

Deputy Chief Kandakala Kumari Rana, who inaugurated the competition, said the Sub-metropolitan City is committed to the long-term development of sports and athletes. She noted that sports foster discipline, leadership, and positive thinking, and urged students to actively participate in the games. The program was chaired by Ward No. 1 Chairman Santosh Mudbhari.

A total of 1,186 players from community schools and 447 from institutional schools will compete in 52 events across six categories, including athletics, team, and individual sports.

The opening ceremony was attended by people’s representatives of the Sub-metropolitan City, municipal employees, school teachers, students, and other stakeholders.
