Two youths arrested for misbehaving with journalist in Dhangadhi
Dhangadhi: Police have arrested two youths on charges of abusing Rama Chand, editor-in-chief of Naya Sandesh Online, which operates from Dhangadhi. According to the District Police Office, Kailali, the arrested individuals are 28-year-old Manish Shrestha and Bikash Bhatta of Dhangadhi-4.
Chand was abused while collecting news at the Sudurpaschim Festival being held in Dhangadhi. The incident came to public attention after a video went viral showing an unknown youth deliberately pushing her from behind while she was speaking on camera about the festival.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim, police arrested the accused on Monday evening. Kailali Police Co-Spokesperson Kashi Singh Bista informed that Shrestha, who was arrested on Monday, is a driver from Palpa currently residing in Dhangadhi. Police said that Bikash Bhatta, who was also involved in the incident, was taken into custody from his home on Tuesday and that further investigation is underway.
The Federation of Nepali Journalists Sudurpaschim Committee and the FNJ Kailali District Branch have expressed serious concern over the incident, stating that misbehavior toward journalists in public places is condemnable. The federation has demanded strict action against those involved in acts that threaten press freedom and the safety of journalists.
According to the police, further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
