Kailali: Raji Lake, a natural water body located in the religious and tourist area of Godavari Municipality-4, Kailali, is gradually collapsing due to insufficient conservation efforts.

Situated in the Chure Mountains, the lake, which spans approximately four hectares, is experiencing erosion caused by rainwater carrying leaves, soil, and sand. Raji Lake holds significant religious importance and serves as the primary source of water for the flow from Kharpani Temple, according to Ganesh Jimi Saud, Chairman of the Mastadham Management Committee.

Chairman Saud stated that despite its historical, cultural, religious, and tourist significance, the lake has been deteriorating annually due to lack of protection. Locals warn that the lake could disappear if conservation measures are not implemented. The lake also supports wildlife in the Chure region, serving as a water source for animals and a site for birds’ recreational activities.

The Mastadham Management Committee has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the lake’s conservation with federal government support. The plan includes diverting water from Kala Khola to maintain water levels year-round, but funding has not yet been secured.

Acting Chief of the Provincial Tourism Program Implementation Unit in Dhangadhi, Dabal Bahadur Bohara, emphasized the urgent need to protect Raji Lake. He noted that while the Division Forest is responsible for conservation, the Provincial Tourism Program has prioritized infrastructure development in the tourism sector. Bohara stated that after the lake’s protection, infrastructure projects such as roads, picnic areas, and walking paths for tourists will be implemented.

According to local legend, the Mashta deity intervened to reconcile a dispute between the religious Gwasi Samaiji and the Mohanyal deity, ultimately settling at the location of the lake.
