Kailali: The monsoon is expected to be more active in the Far West Province this year, raising concerns over increased risks of floods, landslides, and inundation.

With the onset of the monsoon, incidents of natural disasters have already begun across several districts. Authorities have flagged a heightened risk in the Far West, particularly in hilly regions such as Doti, Bajura, Achham, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Bajhang, and Darchula, which are vulnerable to landslides. Similarly, certain areas in Kailali and Kanchanpur face threats of flooding.

On Asad 4, a person was reported dead after being swept away by a river in Gauriganga, Kailali.

Chief District Officer of Kailali, Gogan Bahadur Hamal, stated that preparations are underway to mitigate potential damage. Every year, monsoon-related disasters in the Terai and mountainous regions cause significant loss of life and property. Despite recurring challenges, the government has been criticized for not addressing these risks in a timely manner.

However, officials maintain that all agencies are on alert. Hamal confirmed that the disaster management procedure has been finalized, with security forces, local volunteers, and members of disaster management committees placed on standby. Stakeholder discussions have also been held regarding disaster risk reduction and management.

The risk of road blockages and landslides is particularly high in hilly districts, while settlements in Kailali and Kanchanpur frequently suffer from flooding. Blockages on the Bhimdatta Highway — the primary route connecting the Terai with mountainous areas — often leave travelers stranded.

Amod Dahal, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, stated that the provincial government has conducted training for disaster focal persons in Kailali and Kanchanpur. He added that preparations, including procurement of necessary materials, have been completed down to the district level.
