Kanchanpur: Shuklaphanta Municipality has initiated the distribution of financial assistance to extremely poor families for roofing their houses with zinc sheets.

Under the Safe Citizen Housing Program, the municipality is providing funds to families living in houses with thatched or straw roofs. According to Dheeraj Air, Sub-Engineer of the municipality, the program aims to support families below the poverty line and those rendered homeless due to disasters. The second installment of housing construction funds is now being distributed.

"We have started providing Rs 20,000 as the second installment to 136 families who opened bank accounts with zero balance for housing construction," said Air. "Earlier, these families had received Rs 30,000 as the first installment."

As per the municipality's records, the following families will receive the second installment:

Ward No. 1: 19 families

Ward No. 2: 10 families

Ward No. 3: 5 families

Ward No. 4: 11 families

Ward No. 5: 9 families

Ward No. 7: 21 families

Ward No. 8: 11 families

Ward No. 9: 19 families

Ward No. 10: 8 families

Ward No. 11: 3 families

Ward No. 12: 6 families

A total of 256 families were selected for safe housing under the program, all of whom have received the first installment. Of these, 121 families have now received both installments and are living in safe housing.

Shuklaphanta Mayor Rana Bahadur Mahara emphasized the urgency of the program, stating, "Families below the poverty line and those affected by disasters were living in highly vulnerable conditions. Their thatched roofs posed risks of fire, poisonous insect bites, and water leakage during rain, making their homes unlivable."

In line with the Constitution of Nepal, which ensures the fundamental right to safe housing, the municipality has provided funds for the purchase of zinc sheets and wood at subsidized rates. The newly constructed homes are designed to be fire-resistant and weatherproof, ensuring safe and sustainable living conditions for the beneficiaries.
