Tiger census begins in Shuklaphanta national park

Kanchanpur: The tiger census has officially commenced in Shuklaphanta National Park, Kanchanpur, starting Friday. The monitoring and counting of tigers are being carried out using the camera 'trapping' method, with cameras strategically placed throughout the forest area.

The census was inaugurated by Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, who initiated the process by activating a camera.

On the occasion, Senior Conservation Officer Chandrasheshar Chaudhary of the Park Office highlighted the park's activities and achievements. He stated that the tiger population in the park has been steadily increasing. During last year's tiger census, 44 tigers were recorded, up from 38 in 2078 BS.

According to the park's annual statistics for the fiscal year 2078/79 BS, the park is home to 17 rhinos, 2,313 bison, and 82 nilgai. Additionally, the park hosts diverse wildlife, including 56 species of reptiles, 15 species of amphibians, 88 species of fish, 35 species of butterflies, and 450 species of birds.

The census is part of the park's ongoing efforts to monitor and conserve its biodiversity.
