Tharu Community Commemorates Maghi Festival with Enthusiastic Celebrations
Dhangadhi: The Tharu community is embracing the festivities of the Maghi festival with exuberance, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the villages of Kailali and Kanchanpur. Residents, both local and those returning from work assignments, are converging with their families to partake in the joyous Maghi celebrations.
Initiating their Maghi preparations a week ago, women from various Tharu communities in Kailali have actively engaged in traditional tasks, from grinding rice flour to meticulously tying tapri for the preparation of dhikri. Presently, amidst the heartwarming reunions, they find themselves immersed in the delightful act of savoring the fruits of their collective efforts.
For the Tharu community, Maghe Sankranti marks the commencement of the new year, bringing with it the initiation of new endeavors. The festival serves as a pivotal moment for discussions within the Tharu community, deliberating on the selection of key village figures such as the Bhalmansa (village head), Chowkidar (watchman), and Dhami (Jhankri, spiritual healer). These deliberations encompass decisions regarding responsibilities, resource-sharing, and communal roles.
Maghe Sankranti, being the inaugural festival of the year for the Tharu community, signifies a time of jubilation and merriment. Festivities extend over several months, characterized by spirited dancing and revelry. As the Tharu community gathers to celebrate Maghi, the air is filled with the joyous spirit of a community united in cultural traditions.
