Vegetable farming in Kanchanpur: 2.5 bigha land, annual income of 2.5 million

Kanchanpur: Bir Bahadur Khadka of Bhimdatta Municipality-11 Bhujela of Kanchanpur has been earning more than 25 lakh rupees annually by cultivating vegetables professionally. Khadka, who has been involved in vegetable farming for one and a half decades, has been farming on two bigha and 10 kattha land.

Stating that he owns only 10 kathas of land, he said that he has rented two bighas for vegetable cultivation. According to him, more than 100 tons of vegetables are produced annually. Khadka said that they are producing seasonal and non-seasonal vegetables, now the fields are planted with cauliflower, cabbage, chilli, eggplant, radish, capsicum and coriander.

"Just a few months ago, only green coriander and vegetables were sold for more than 2 lakh rupees", he said, "Cauli is sold for more than 10 lakh rupees in a year". He is the only professional vegetable farmer in Khadka Ward. Stating that he had no training in vegetable farming, Khadka said that he learned by preparing and planting fields for vegetables in the fields of others.

He said that he has been continuing the skills learned in that way. He said that he got help from Kisan Project-2 for irrigation and a power tiller for plowing a field with 50 percent subsidy from the Far West Regional Directorate of Agriculture. Stating that the income from vegetable farming is the livelihood of the joint family of 12 people, Khadka also built a concrete house.

"My son, daughter-in-law, my wife and I are working in the vegetable field from morning to evening," he said, "we are busy with irrigating the farm, harvesting vegetables and taking them to the market to sell them." , used to cultivate wheat. It was difficult for the family to eat all year round. He said that he has a loan of up to 1.5 lakhs to cover household expenses. He said that the income started to increase after he started cultivating vegetables by renting land for a few years.
